Silver Winners in the 2025 Devon Tourism Awards

28th November 2025
Mid Devon Show 2025 Win SILVER in Devon Tourism Awards
“We are thrilled that the Mid Devon Show has won Silver at the Visit Devon Awards. This achievement is a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of our incredible army of 250 volunteers, who give so much of their time and energy to make the show what it is.
While this award recognises our 2025 event, for us it represents far more than a single year. It celebrates the 32 years we’ve spent building, evolving, and strengthening the show and its role at the heart of our local community.
Our volunteers are the beating heart of the Mid Devon Show. Their passion, commitment, and love for the event have shaped it into one of Devon’s best days out. We are deeply grateful for everything they do. The Mid Devon Show truly is a show organised by our community, for our community—and this award belongs to them.”

2021 Show – We are good to go !

15th June 2021
The Mid Devon Show and its organisers are in full support of the announcement by the Government on Monday evening. We fully understand this decision, but also sympathise with the many businesses this will effect especially our friends in the hospitality sector. Any decision that helps tackle Coronavirus and avoid any further lockdowns has to be supported.
With all that said, the Government’s announcement will not affect the Mid Devon Show plans. Our date of the 24th July is on the other side of the announced Terminus Date of the 19th July. In addition Agricultural Shows joined the list of permitted events at Stage 2 of lockdown easing, in recognition that they continue to remain low risk when it comes to Covid-19.
Whilst we fully expect our show to be held in Stage 4 of relaxations at the end of July, we have always been planning the show with the current restrictions in place. So we continue to organise our 28th Show with Covid Measures at the forefront of our plans with the knowledge that relaxations are to be announced by the Government.
Covid Considerations for 2021
- Space – Our show site is held in 50 acres excluding car parks and demonstration areas. This allows us to accommodate 24,000 Visitors whilst giving everyone 7m square space.
- Indoor spaces have been increased in size and the number of traders within those spaces decreased to improve flow and increase air circulation.
- One way systems in place throughout indoor areas
- Track and Trace in place for all attendees of the show by way of ticket allocation
- Masks required for entering any indoor space
- Widening of all avenues to 9m wide to allow free movement and distancing
- Forward purchasing of Barcoded tickets to allow us to monitor visitor numbers and gain track and trace details
- Extra professional stewarding to allow us to manage flow of visitors in potential pinch points
- Change in end of day exit routes to improve traffic flow and reduce wait times
- Change in showfield layout to reduce traffic and people movement on site
- Additional toilet and baby changing facilities
- Huge investment in additional handwashing and sanitising facilities
- Improved entry system to avoid queueing and encourage social distancing and promote good sanitising practices
- Enhanced medical presence to advise and assist with any concerns or requirements
Can I take this opportunity to remind you of the following about tickets
- Tickets on the day are unlikely to be available
- Children 15 and Under gain FREE entry to the show, but MUST OBTAIN A TICKET
- Currently you can purchase tickets through our website or by calling 01884 820859
- You can also purchase tickets by visiting our office in Halberton
- Ticket numbers are restricted and once we have reached our allocation we are unable to release or sell any more.
Can I thank everyone for their support of the show and we are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Knightshayes for a true celebration of Mid Devon Life!
Colin Nation – Show Organiser

2021 Show Confirmed as going ahead

1st March 2021
We are now in a position to tell you of the current position of the 2021 show.
After many meetings over the last four weeks we have been able to make a decision as to if we are able to proceed with plans for this years show.
Meetings held with Mid Devon District Council, The Safety Advisory Group, ASAO and of course our own Finance and Organising Committee have taken place. Of course the Government’s Road Map has paved the way for the country and our show, to start making decisions. The amazing success of the Vaccine Roll Out continues to put us all in a safer place as each day goes by. We can also take comfort and positivity that other major events in the area will be taking place weeks before ours. Such as The Devon County Show and The Lets Rock Music Festival at Powderham Castle.
We must thank all the people involved with F&O who are all volunteering their time led by Angus Cottey. Without their dedication to the show we simply would not have an event each year, but especially this year.
So with that said, and taking in to consideration all the advice and announcements made, I am delighted to tell you that I have been given the instructions to plan for our 2021 show. This, of course will be done, taking in to consideration the guidelines as they change. Also making sure we continue to have in place additional safety measures to ensure the comfort of everyone visiting the show field. We will need everyone’s help in achieving this in promoting COVID friendly processes. Regardless of the relaxation of social mixing we will keep certain rules in place to make everyone comfortable. We will be continually listening to all the authorities and we are prepared to flex with any announcements. We are very fortunate that many of our major suppliers including Gates, Traffic and Medical suppliers have already been involved with running COVID safe events. With the seemingly limitless skills of the people involved with the show, I have no doubt we can achieve a safe, friendly and fun Mid Devon Show.
You will appreciate that in normal circumstances a show takes 12 months to plan and organise….. we only have 5 left. So it will be a challenging time in the office and your support will be much appreciated if you are in a position to give it.
The office will be manned from now on, Monday to Friday, but we are still under government restrictions. If you do need to visit the office please ask yourself is it completely necessary and if it is, then please wear a face mask and let us know you are coming.
It just leaves me to say thank you for everyone’s support over the last 12 months and I am really looking forward to welcoming you to the Show Ground on the 24th July.
Colin Nation – Show Organiser

2nd National Lockdown

3rd November 2020 – 9.00am
The Government have announced a second period of National Lockdown and the Mid Devon Show has reacted accordingly.
Our office will only be open on Mondays throughout November but will NOT be open to the public. For the rest of the week our Staff will be furloughed and unable to deal with any work on behalf of the show. That said emails and the office will be looked after remotely by volunteers.
In the meantime you may have noticed that our website has begun updating with information about our 2021 show. Please take this early opportunity to apply, Risk Free, to join us at our 28th event.
We look forward to welcoming everyone to the show Ground on the 24th July 2021. It certainly will be a bigger chance than ever to have a true celebration of Mid Devon Life.
Everyone at Mid Devon Show would like to wish the very best to everyone at this difficult time and if we can do anything to assist please get in contact.
We look forward to returning to the office week commencing the 7th December.
Colin Nation
Show Organiser

2020 Show Cancelled

24th April 2020 – 9.00am
It is with much sadness that we have made the difficult decision to cancel this years show. The ongoing developments surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic will not allow us to hold the event safely.
On the 23rd April the Chairman of the Mid Devon Show spoke with all the Organisation committee and a unanimous decision was made to cancel the the 2020 show with immediate effect. This decision was based on recent Government advice surrounding social distancing and for the welfare and interests of the Community, the Public, the Traders, and exhibitors.
We realise that this will be a huge disappointment to everyone involved with the show and of course the thousands of visitors who join us each year. However I am sure you will understand the reasons why we have had to make this decision. We tried to remain positive for as long as we could, however the long term view of large gatherings has forced us in to this difficult decision.
We would like to thank all the suppliers, Traders and the general public for remaining positive with us and of course our army of volunteers who have worked so hard up to this point.
You will appreciate that the show office will be very busy in the next few weeks contacting people to discuss their commitments to the show with bookings or tickets. Rest assured we will be in contact as quick as we can and we thank you for your patience in advance.
This also gives us the opportunity to start plans for our 2021 show earlier than normal.

The Show Day
By our Show Director
Rose Chanin

Its hard work, but great fun !
It would be with a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation that I arrive at the Showfield on Showday, at just before 6am. Everyone who has been involved in the physical setting up of the fields and car parks for the fortnight beforehand, and all those in the office dealing with the last minute telephone calls and administrative work, will be feeling the effects of sleepless nights, but still manage to turn out bright and breezy knowing there is a job to do! Our ultimate aim is to entertain our visitors and give them a full day of enjoyment and education, and at the same time doing everything to keep everyone safe. (This would have brought on a whole new meaning in 2020!)
First thing to do is to check that Colin and his team have settled into the Show’s office, and that the radio distribution is going to plan. Communication across the whole field, and into the extremities of the site, is critical for maintaining a passage of information and, sometimes, instruction to the necessary people involved in particular activities. We have a duty to ensure that the highways are kept flowing, and that visitors get a warm welcome when they arrive at the site.
Most of the larger traders will have set up their stands in the days beforehand, and the “grounds” team of absolute stalwarts pride themselves on taking great care to make sure everything is smart and neat in preparation. The traders often report to us how much this is appreciated, and it makes for a good relationship all round. Visitors and traders alike will find plenty of internal and external signage to help them locate who or what they are looking for, and the field fills quickly and efficiently with exhibitors, traders and competitors.
By 9am those amazing livestock exhibitors will have settled in; washed and prepared their animals for the various classes, and begun making their way to the judging areas. It is with total confidence that we can leave the livestock team to it! They are so experienced and patient, and deal with their own issues throughout the whole day. They have the commentators, the stewards, the Vets and plenty of available refreshment to have a really great day together, and it is evident from the buzz of activity that the public love this area of our Show. The combination of Cattle, Sheep, Pigs, Goats and Poultry is interesting, educational and fun and the children’s faces tell all!
By 10am the car parks are really beginning to fill, and the public gates are getting much busier. The traffic and pedestrian management teams are ensuring that no-one parks under the beautiful ancient trees in the National Trust parkland. We are so fortunate to hold this Annual Community event so close to Tiverton and in the environs of the wonderful Knightshayes Court. The aspect is just beautiful, and it adds significantly to the enjoyment of the day for everyone.
A quick scurry around to as many of the features as possible…. on foot, I may add!… gives me an indication of the footfall in the various areas, and an understanding of where the public head for first. The Food Hall will be incredibly busy but that remains the case throughout the whole day. As, too, does the Craft tent, the Flower and Garden feature, The Young Farmers Tent, and the Magpie Marquee. The Music pavilion attracts a significant audience and the Churches area offers shade and some refreshment for those looking to rest their legs for a while. All areas of the Show’s provision have Chief or Senior Stewards and they make particular note of any changes that they would like to see for another year, to maintain an interesting, informative and enjoyable day for our valued visitors.
By lunchtime the Members’ and Sponsors’ Marquee will be extremely busy serving lunches and, perhaps, a glass of wine for our many very generous Show supporters. The Show President will be offering hospitality to the invited guests, and looking forward to presenting all the awards to the main competition winners later in the afternoon. No time to stop, though, as the Senior Management team, comprising the Health and Safety Officer, Show Organiser, Show Chairman, Show Director and Traffic Management Stewards meet to debrief and reiterate the plan for the remainder of the day. The whole event, which attracts up to around 16,000 visitors, is governed by the 108 page “Event Management Plan” that has been carefully prepared by ourselves, and studied and ratified by the local Safety Advisory Group – safety is something we all take very seriously!
As the afternoon approaches the Main Ring hosts more exciting attractions and the crowd gravitates towards the noise of the Motorcycle display or the “hollering” of the members of the local beagles pack, as they encourage the children into the ring to meet with, and then to compete with, the local foxhounds. The smiling faces of those at the ringside gives us all a warm feeling that we are doing something right, and an appreciation of why we give up hours and hours of our own time to plan all-year-round for this day.
Continuing to move around the field, and trying to get a feel of the energy and dynamic of the likes of the Countryside Area, the Working Demonstrations area, the Fairground, the Field Attractions, the Mobile Caterers, and the Dog Show I find that I cannot take in detail but simply gain an overview of how it all fits together, and whether something is not working in its present location but could well work better somewhere else. We like everyone to feel that they have had “a bite of the cherry” and wish to return next year. It is very rewarding when I get stopped by people wishing to tell me how much they are enjoying their day … and not because they have something to complain about! Having said that… we do take complaints very seriously! We use it in a positive to way to aid the improvement of our event.
Significant highlight of the day is the Grand Parade of Livestock in the main ring. This, along with the display of Heavy Horses pulling vintage Farm machinery, epitomises the heart and strength of the Agricultural community and its background. No Country Show is complete without these two features parading the smartest and the best in their field, and this is where one will hear the largest and appreciative applause.
Depending upon whether we have continuous sunshine, or, as has been known, occasional rain, the crowd will either retire to the shade of the oak trees and get a drink from the bar, or head towards the car parks to make their way home. This is the moment when we must maintain rigour around traffic movement on the field. The pedestrian is given priority and must be able to move around with the family without having to watch for vehicles which should not be moving on site.
The Show day ends just around 6pm and the traffic gates become extremely busy from there on. We are politely asking those who came onto the field during a three-hour period in the morning to not expect to all exit the field during the first hour of gates open in the evening!!
The day will have been an exhausting one, and the biggest relief at the end of that day is to hear from the First Aiders that they have dealt with very little in the way of incident, barring the odd bites and stings, perhaps. (You just hope these aren’t inflicted by any of the persons or animals on site!)
Exiting the site goes on into the late evening, but the Security Company staff ensure that we manage that swiftly and quietly and try to keep the noise and disruption to a minimum.
There are no lie-ins on a Sunday morning for many of us. A whole team of volunteers have agreed to rock up early next morning to begin the process of gathering together the barriers, the signs, the generators, the tables and chairs, the sheep hurdles, and a whole raft of other “stuff” that has been used throughout the site to ensure that the whole event has been a safe and successful one. This is the opportunity for everyone to share their various experiences of the day itself, and to smile at some of the amusing incidents that some will have encountered, with that many people having a day out.
A week later, and as the last of the litter is picked very carefully from the ground; the metal detectors have been invited in to check the Frankpitt’s Chettiscombe land for any stray metalwork that may have been overlooked; and the boundary fencings have been reinstated, we can cheerfully hand the various pockets of land back to the owners, shake their hand, and be thankful that another Show has gone well. It is very rewarding to know that our efforts have made a significant impact on a vast number of people from all over the country.

Trader News – Elizabeth Jade

Some Good News
Autistic author, Elizabeth Jade had hoped to share her children’s books at the Mid Devon Show this year. The first couple of books from her ‘Akea’ series are already on sale at Liznojan in Tiverton, Otter Books In Ottery St Mary, and the Toy Shop at Dartington Cider Press.
As someone with autism and anxiety, Elizabeth (22) struggles to showcase her work and the show would have been a wonderful opportunity, but her family went into shielding, and all her promotional plans for this summer along with them.
I approached Devon Life magazine on her behalf, but despite her interesting personal journey as an autistic writer, they were unable to include her as she lives just outside the county border, in Wellington. However, Somerset Life magazine were able to feature her, and the article will be in the August edition which is due out mid July.
Elizabeth’s husky/wolf stories are told through the eyes of the animals in a style likened to Jack London’s Call of the Wild, and appeal to animal lovers of all ages even though the target age is 7 to 11.
Best wishes for a successful show in 2021.
Amanda Barton (On behalf of Elizabeth Jade)

Trader News – Plentysworkshop

Some Good News
It was all going so well. We were delighted to secure a trading position at the 2020 Mid Devon Show. Our little craft business, PLENTYSWORKSHOP is a husband-and-wife team effort, and we really enjoy what we do. We make rings, cufflinks, keyrings and other fine jewellery out of vintage coins from half crowns to farthings. For the past five years, we have traded at craft fairs, shows and events throughout Devon and South West England, but this was going to be our very first time at the Mid Devon Show. Then, the virus struck. When the rest of our event diary started to empty, we held our breath that the Mid Devon Show might be able to go ahead, but it was not to be.
This, though, is a good news story. We have been so grateful for the support we have received in these strange times. We’ve kept in touch with customers, suppliers, fellow traders and show staff through our Facebook page, website and e-mail messaging. The technology is not the same as seeing everyone in person, but it has allowed the connections to continue. This adversity is a common bond and has drawn us all closer together, even though we are physically far apart. The time in lockdown has also meant that we have been able to experiment, and create two new ranges in our line of pendants, using not just sixpences, but shillings and halfpennies too.
As an ‘older couple’, Terry and I have been staying at home since 23rd March. While we have coped quite well in our isolation, we are really looking forward to getting back out there again. The best news is that the date of 24th July 2021 for the next Mid Devon Show is already in the diary, and we can’t wait to see you there.

Show Office

15th May 2020 – 8.30am
Since the cancellation announcement of this years show the office has been working hard to ensure a smooth closure process. As you can imagine Months of preparation had already been made and to undo this in a few weeks has been challenging and to be honest very tough. Can I thank everyone for their patience whilst this process has been taking place. Colin and Amanda are starting to see the end of this and tell me that we should have finished this process by Friday 29th May.
With that said it is the shows intention to close the Office completely for the month of June. If you do have any outstanding business with the show then please contact us before Friday 29th May.
It is currently our intention to reopen the office on the 1st July.
Thank you again for all your continued support of the show and I look forward to meeting up with you personally when it is possible to do so.
In the meantime, I hope you keep safe and well
Angus Cottey – Chairman

2021 Positions

7th May 2020 – 8.30am
It was very important to quickly ensure the President positions and Show Charity situation was clarified for 2021.
I am very pleased to announce that Colin Rowland will continue his presidency up to the 2021 show. I have also spoken to Terry Hamlin who has agreed to remain President elect for 2021 and will become President for the 2022 show.
I am very grateful to both Colin and Terry for their continued support of the show. We look forward to welcoming you on the relevant show days and enjoying the show day experience.
I am also delighted that Hospiscare will continue to be the show charity from now and up to our 2021 show. It was a disappointment that we had to cancel the quiz night back in March and then the benefits of being at this years show. We look forward to working with them closely once the situation allows. I would imagine they will need the support of the Mid Devon community now more than ever.
I look forward to when we are able to start planning for 2021, but until then please stay safe
Angus Cottey – Chairman

Message from our 2020 Charity
Hospiscare

6th April 2020 – 1.00pm
Our Charity Partner Hospiscare is predicting a £1 million loss due the COVID-19 crisis with the closure of all its shops and public fundraising activities.
Hospiscare are a local charity covering Mid and East Devon as well as Exeter, they are integral to the end of life care in our community including Pine Lodge day hospice here in Tiverton. Though they continue to keep their specialist in-patient ward open and community services going at this difficult time their financial position is now worrying.
Hospiscare have provided useful information through their website and social media pages, here you will find tips about wellbeing as well as details of visiting the hospice and support that is available.
It is a difficult time for all but if you are able make a donation, sign-up to its lottery or make a monthly regular gift please visit their website www.hospiscare.co.uk.’

Message from the Chairman

2nd April 2020 – 3.00pm
Dear All,
We are still planning for the 2020 show on the 25th July.
In times of hardship I am always glad to see how the Mid Devon Community rallies around to help each other. We at the show are prepared to do our bit, and we have sought to ease the cash flow for our traders by deferring payment to later in the year. We have also decided not to print livestock schedules this year and hope that exhibitors near and far will avail themselves of the opportunity to enter the show competitions by going on line and using the showbiz module to enter their livestock. If there is anything you think that the show can help with please do get in contact.
The office is now functioning from our show organiser’s home, and my thanks go to our IT supporters who were able to make this happen. The committee are still positive to build for the show on the 25th July in the hope that the restrictions thus imposed on public gatherings will be relaxed by then.
To reassure all though, we will make a definitive decision for the 2020 show as soon as we can.
Angus Cottey
Show Chairman

Show Office Announcement – Coronavirus (COVID-19)

24th March 2020 – 8.00am
Dear friends of the Mid Devon Show.
CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Our office doors will be closed as of 24 March to protect public safety during this difficult time. Our show organiser is now working from home and will continue to maintain office duties until we can return.
We know this will be disappointing to the many people and volunteers who use the office during the week. However we know you will understand that under the current situation it is essential we take this decision.
Rest assured that we had planned for this eventuality and the day to day business of the show can and will continue.
Stay Safe and Stay Home

Traders Announcement – Coronavirus (COVID-19)

20th March 2020 – 1.00pm
Traders – We are in this together.
We understand that business is grinding to a halt, putting most traders in a position of having limited or No cash flow. This coupled with upcoming events being cancelled or even moved to later in the year, adding to the challenges of simply doing business.
We have been very lucky to have a large family of traders who join us each year and help make our show one of the best in the South of England. Without you, our show is simply not the same and I hope you also value having a presence at our lovely show ground…. We really are in this together.
We hope the following actions will help you to still make plans and be assured that there is no risk to you. This includes the ability to defer payment for your stand until closer to the show. This is a relaxation on our requirement that trade stands are only accepted once payment received. We are offering a glimmer of hope to having a date in the diary when you can join us and keep trading.
If you have already booked and Paid
Your booking is fully protected and pitch already allocated.
In the event we are forced to cancel, then your payment will be refunded OR our preference is, you are offered to transfer your booking to our 2021 show.
We can only process refunds in the event of us being directed to cancel the event and not before.
If you have not yet booked
Fill out a manual booking form and return to the office. CLICK HERE FOR A FORM
Payment is not required at this point.
Your booking will be accepted and placed in to our plans.
Assuming our event proceeds, We will require payment for your stand by 15th June 2020
If payment is not received then we will contact you to arrange payment or cancellation of your stand.
In the event we are forced to cancel, then there are no financial details to deal with, but we would hope you would transfer your booking to 2021
We hope, in some small way, this allows you to book your trade stand with confidence in the knowledge that there is no financial commitment on your booking. As we first said we really are in this together and we must find a way to help each other through this horrible time.
As always the safety of our volunteers, visitors, traders and exhibitors is the most important thing. If you are in need and there is anything we can do then please let us know

Announcement – Coronavirus (COVID-19)

18th March 2020 – 10.30am
Dear friends of the Mid Devon Show.
With the current uncertain times caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, we wanted to reassure you of the shows actions in the coming weeks. Our main priority is of course the health of our volunteers, visitors, traders and exhibitors.
Based on the current UK Government Advice we are still actively building and making plans for our 2020 show being held on 25th July. We are still accepting trade stand bookings and selling tickets online via our website. We encourage everyone to continue supporting the show in the knowledge that their booking or purchase is fully protected if we are directed to cancel our event. This also applies to anyone who has already made a booking or purchased tickets with us.
Obviously as advice from the Government changes we will react and change inline with those instructions. We will endeavour to work with everyone and continue to update you all as things change.
In the event our show office is forced to close then our activities will switch to be run from our Show Organisers Home.
We truly are working hard to ensure we all have something to look forward to at the end of July and we value everyone’s understanding as we go through these tough times.
I would like to extend a massive thank you to all our suppliers who have been very supportive and understanding…. We really are all in this together.
Lastly we hope everyone is keeping well and if we can offer any support to anyone then please let us know
